Arborist Trade in Manitoba
The Manitoba Urban Forest Council is excited to announce a significant milestone for Manitoba’s arboriculture industry: the Province of Manitoba has approved the designation of Arborist as a voluntary trade in Manitoba.
The designation of Arborist as a trade recognizes the skills, knowledge and professionalism required to work safely and effectively with trees. It also creates an opportunity to build a stronger and more consistent pathway for training, apprenticeship and certification in our industry
A few things worth knowing about what this means and what comes next:
Manitoba is the fifth Canadian jurisdiction to designate Arborist, meeting the national threshold for Red Seal engagement. Apprenticeship Manitoba has already notified the Canadian Council of Directors of Apprenticeship and will participate in the development of Red Seal Occupational Standards. The goal is to build Manitoba's apprenticeship program in alignment with the emerging national framework from the start.
Locally, legislative amendments are now underway to formally add Arborist to Manitoba's apprenticeship and certification regulation. This is the first new trade designation in Manitoba since 2011! Full program development, including occupational standards, technical training, and certification, is the beginning of a multi-year process.
Industry participation will be essential. MBUFC encourages arborists, employers, educators, municipalities, tree-care organizations and other members of Manitoba’s urban forestry community to remain engaged as this work progresses.
The Apprenticeship and Certification Board acknowledged the strength of the submission and the breadth of industry collaboration behind it. We are immensely proud of this and the arboriculture community in Manitoba.
We want to thank everyone who contributed to the application and consultation process. The support and expertise provided by Manitoba’s arboriculture community were instrumental in reaching this milestone. We look forward to continuing that collaboration as the trade is developed and implemented. Arborists across Manitoba will benefit from this achievement for years to come.
